SUP!

Christopher and I took a Stand Up Paddleboard class today at Shawnee Mission Park! The class was through LL Bean and it was so much fun. At first, Chris sat on my board while I paddled until he got comfortable and wanted to try himself. He did a great job! Neither of us fell in, although it would have been fine because the lake was like bath water today. Unfortunately I don't have any action shots because there was no way my phone was going on the board with me. But we had a great time and will be back again!
And Jonathan, although not old enough yet to paddle board, has been working on his surfing stance. It won't be long now!

Reasons to Wash Your Produce

I picked this piece of kale this morning and found a lovely cicada shell on the back of it!

The Persistence of the Garden

Our garden just keeps giving us gifts and many times we hardly have to do anything to get them! Don't get me wrong, it was a lot of work to put all the plants and vegetables in this spring but with minimal effort, we just keep getting fantastic veggies and flowers. With three huge basil plants, I've been making fresh pesto every week. This weekend the menu includes a pesto pizza that also has some tomatoes we picked up at the farmer's market this morning... And then, as you know, we've had some cute little pests in our backyard that enjoy eating all my young plants. But the amazing thing is, some of the flowers have returned beautifully, like this day lily and the zinnias that the bunnies ate back in May...

Our butterfly bush is growing nicely and will have to be transplanted away from the path as I didn't know how big they get!
This week, I pulled a few vegetable plants out that are either dying or will no longer produce food this summer. The sunflowers were cut down, and I pulled out the eggplants and the cabbage. I also cut back our massive zucchini plant and found a few pepper plants underneath that I forgot were there! And Christopher actually has his first little pepper growing!
Chris wanted to include this picture of the gardens that he took himself...
It has been a learning experience this year and we are getting all kinds of ideas for next summer too. We will continue with the square foot gardens next year and plan our planting of them a little better. We would also like to build another (maybe larger, rectangular) plot for zucchini and swiss chard. And of course, bunnies, it's on! I will be building a chicken wire fence around my coneflowers and black eyed susans until they get bigger so our cute little pests will stay away. My grandfather used to sit out back with a BB gun to keep the bunnies away. I may try the less dangerous approach and fence off my plants!

Streetcar

We rode the Kansas City Streetcar this afternoon! The boys had fun and it was a pleasant, air-conditioned ride from Union Station down to the River Market...
Jonathan especially loved the streetcar. In this video, you will see that he gets very concerned when the car stops and signals for "more." He called it the "choo-choo."

When we got to the River Market, we stopped at the Italian grocer and admired the ridiculous amounts and types of pasta that they sell! Then the boys got Nutella cookies as a treat.

We also picked up Christopher's first ever cannoli, which as you can see, he enjoyed tremendously!

Deanna Rose

We met Grammy at Deanna Rose this morning and checked out some of the animals and gardens before it got too hot!
Jonathan eventually got comfortable with the goats...
Chris still enjoys the horse rides and the gardens too!

Summer Nights

What could be better on a hot summer night than swimming, grilled cheese and fries by the pool and ice cream at Betty Rae's!?!?

Swim Banquet

The Waves had their end-of-the-year banquet tonight at Woodside. It was a fun night, laid back, lots of swimming involved with awards given out and a great slide show that captured the season. Chris had such a blast swimming this year and looks forward to next summer already!

Goings On

We just can't get enough of the pool! Yesterday after spending all morning at the pool for Christopher's meet, we all went swimming at the JCC with the Beznovsky boys and then stayed for a poolside dinner...

This morning, Chris dropped off a bunch of donations to Wayside Waifs that he got at his birthday party. We also got a tour of the cat facility!

Level II Chapionships

Christopher swam at Level II championships this morning and did great! His event today was the backstroke and he put up his best time of the season, finishing 8th out of 17 kids. Here is a video of his heat...

While we were waiting for his time to be posted, the boys played on the swings. Thank goodness for those swings today! Jonathan spent a total of 2 hours in those swings since we were hanging out since 6:30 in the morning!

Smells like...

Jonathan has been trying to jump for awhile and today he finally got airborne! He combined this new skill with some of his dance moves and, along with Chris and a little Nirvana, the party was in his room...

Today's Harvest

We have new things ready in our garden this morning! I picked some corn, eggplant, Christopher's cabbage and a zucchini. Unfortunately the corn is a little over ready so we won't be able to actually enjoy this one. There are a few more growing so hopefully we'll get the timing right! This year has been a real lesson in growing vegetables. Speaking of, there might be some bunnies with tummy aches because two of the milkweed plants that I transplanted have been eaten. Grrrr! I'm making many mental notes for next year about what needs to be fenced off from the bunny colony living in our neighborhood. Maybe Holly will become a total outside dog next year!

Mo-Kan Championships

Christopher and his swim team had the 2016 Mo-Kan Novice Championships this morning! The Waves did great! They won the overall meet. Chris did very well too. He swam four events--medley relay, freestyle, backstroke and freestyle relay. Both of his relay teams placed first and Chris got third overall on backstroke, earning a time that qualifies him for the Level II championships on Thursday. So we're not done yet!! Here are videos of his races today, in the order that he did them...

Last Swim Practice

J was trying out his friend Maddie's goggles at Christopher's last swim practice before championships! And looking quite swell I might add...

Happy Birthday Christopher!

Happy 8th birthday to our sweet boy Christopher! To quote him when he first woke up, "I can't believe I'm eight years old!" Neither can we buddy!

Kauffman Gardens

We took a trip over to Kauffman Gardens this afternoon after visiting the library to check out their flowers and to get ideas...

Swimming

Last night was Christopher's final regular season swim meet and it was an exciting one to watch! As seen above, the whole fan club was there (Daddy too but he was not pictured). Jonathan hung out with some of his favorite people--Zaira, Warwick and Grammy. And Chris had a great meet! He got two firsts (one for freestyle overall and one for medley relay in which he swam freestyle also) and a fifth place for backstroke. I wish I had a video of the relay because it was an exciting, come-from-behind photo finish! Chris swam freestyle which is the last stroke of the medley. Their team was behind by several lengths and he caught up and beat the other team to the wall. It was a great finish!

Butterfly Garden

A couple of months ago, we started some milkweed from seeds in a rectangular pot on our deck. Today we added them to the butterfly garden to attract monarchs in about a month or so. Good news about milkweed--it's poisonous to bunnies. Since the bunnies in our backyard ate so many of my perennials, I am showing no mercy! If these milkweed plants don't make it, it will be because of heat, lack of water or other reasons!

So Cute

When Chris read his card from Finley, this sweet message was written inside...

Skate Party!

Well, it's a little early but we celebrated Christopher's 8th birthday (still 9 days away) with a roller skating party at Skate City in Shawnee. It was a lot of fun! Not much can beat pizza, cake, soda and roller skating...
Grammy hung out with Jonathan and watched the skaters. We practically had the whole place to ourselves!
Chris wanted to invite Finley and Georgia to the party too. He was very happy to see his friends!
One of Jonathan's favorite people right now is Giles' sister Zaira. She will hang out with him at the pool during swim team practice and he absolutely adores her!
Pretty soon it will be this kid's turn to get out there and skate!
